INSTALLATION PLANNING

Cast iron pipes in the field.

This original STRIKING DEALS illustration identifies the product family and installation workflow without copying a manufacturer or third-party image.

It is a sourcing and coordination visual, not an installation drawing. Supports, connections, clearances and code requirements must be verified for the selected product and project.
MANUFACTURING

How the material is commonly made

Cast-iron soil pipe is made by melting iron and casting it—commonly by centrifugal methods for pipe—then cooling, cleaning, machining and applying the manufacturer finish. Fittings are cast in molds. Hubless systems use separate shielded couplings with elastomeric gaskets.

MATERIAL

Composition and construction

Cast iron with manufacturer-standard coating or finish; hubless couplings combine an elastomeric gasket, metal shield and clamps.

CONFIGURATIONS

Common ways to specify it

  • Nominal diameter and pipe length
  • Hubless pipe and fitting pattern
  • Standard or heavy-duty coupling
  • Hangers, supports and firestopping accessories
APPLICATIONS

Typical construction uses

  • Gravity sanitary and waste piping
  • Vent and storm drainage
  • Commercial and multifamily drainage systems

Quality and document checks

  • Inspect casting and coating condition
  • Verify coupling size and clamp requirements
  • Confirm support spacing and test procedure

Important limitations

  • Generally intended for gravity drainage, not pressure service
  • Coupling type must match the system
  • Handling requires attention to weight and impact damage
